Flora and Fauna

The national park is located in the transition zone between the savannah and the Sahel . In the northeast, flooded meadows with species such as Echinochloa pyramidalis , Oryza longistaminata are located, Hyparrhenia rufa and Vetiveria nigritana are less common. Sandstones in the south and west of the park shelter Sclerocarya birrea and Anogeissus leiocarpus . Trees are represented by species such as Tamarindus indica and Balanites aegyptiaca [1] .

Such rare species of large mammals as Gazella rufifrons and Damaliscus lunatus korrigum live in the national park. In addition, about 1300 individuals of the Savannah elephant Loxodonta africana [1] , as well as Giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis ), aardvark ( Orycteropus afer ) and African warthog ( Phacochoerus aethiopicus ) [2] are found .

There are 379 bird species in the park and its adjacent plains, some of which were observed only once. Rare species include Marmaronetta angustirostris , Aythya nyroca , Aquila clanga , Falco naumanni , Neotis nuba . In addition, Ortyxelos meiffrenii , Ardeotis arabs , Struthio camelus , Dendrocygna viduata , Balearica pavonina are found in the park [1] .

Human Relationship

In 1937, a hunting reserve appeared on the territory of the park. In 1968, it was announced the creation of a national park, and in 1979 - a biosphere reserve. For a long time the park was well maintained, there were joint projects with the World Wide Fund for Nature . The situation changed in 1979 with the construction of the dam Maga dam 25 km south of the park. Due to the dam, the area of flooded territories was significantly reduced, which led to a change in the plant world, and after it a reduction in the number of antelopes. The project for the restoration of territories was launched in 1994 [1] .

The park is open from November 15 to June 15. There are no hotels or camping sites in the park [5] .
