Croatia's accession to the EU took 10 years (from the date of application for membership in 2003 to the accession in 2013).
History
Croatia applied for EU membership in 2003, and the European Commission recommended the state to become an official candidate in early 2004. The candidate status was assigned by the European Council in mid-2004, and the date for the start of negotiations, originally set for early 2005, was postponed until October same year. Following the start of negotiations on October 3, 2005, the verification process of 33 sections of the legislation was completed on October 18, 2006 [1] . Negotiations were delayed for 10 months due to a border dispute with Slovenia , but in September 2009, representatives of Slovenia announced that they were ready to withdraw their objections to the entry of Croatia, agreeing to resolve the conflict with the help of international mediators [2] .
Since the collapse of Yugoslavia, Croatia has achieved the best results after Slovenia in rebuilding the country and hoped to become the second former Yugoslav republic to join the Union. The country has a stable market economy, as well as statistical indicators (for example, GDP per capita ) higher than Bulgaria and Romania, which joined in 2007. Before the start of negotiations with Croatia, the acquis was divided into 35 sections instead of the usual 31. It was assumed that the new sections, previously included in the section on agricultural policy, could cause difficulties, as was the case with other countries.
At the end of 2005, EU authorities predicted that Croatia would join the Union between 2010 and 2012. In June 2011, EU leaders approved the entry of Croatia into the community [3] .
The accession treaty of Croatia, including some amendments to the EU Treaties, was expected to be signed in 2012. The ratification process by the parliaments of all 27 EU member states was completed on June 21, 2013, and Croatia joined the EU on July 1, 2013 [4] .
