History
The modern territory of Nance County was previously part of the Pawnee Indian Reservation , formed in 1857 as a result of an agreement between the US government and the Pawnee tribe to assign their lands in exchange for reservation lands [2] . In 1867, Nebraska became the 14th state of the United States, after which the state authorities decided to redeem Indian rights to reserve land. The main part of the territory was sold over the next few years [3] , in the mid-1970s the rest of the land was sold, and in 1876 the inhabitants of the previous reservation were transferred to acquired for the Indians (including those received from the sale of land in Nebraska) reservation territory in central Oklahoma [4] [5] [6] .
The boundaries of Nance County were defined in 1879, the district got its name in honor of the fourth Nebraska Governor Albinus Nance [7] .
