The Hong Kong Maritime Ministry is responsible for maintaining the safety and environmental protection of the port of Hong Kong, ships, registered foreign ships in Hong Kong and monitoring the movement of ships in the waters of Hong Kong, search and rescue operations in a large area of the South China Sea.

The Ministry of the Sea is also responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations in waters near Hong Kong:
