Name Origin
It was named so because of its location in the center of the station neighborhood, the majority of the inhabitants of which are railway workers and members of their families.
Development
Before the October Revolution of 1917, the street as such did not exist. In the area where the street now lies, there were suburbs. The few buildings had a purely economic or handicraft purpose, but in the main there were gardens and orchards. The center of the present Zheleznodorozhnaya Street was crossed by the Vindavskoye (now Moskovskoe) highway and Novo-Yamskaya street (now Mira ) populated by coachmen serving the Zubtsov-Sychevsky and Toropetsk tracts.
The main residential development of the street was already in the years of the first Soviet five-year plans in the 20s and 30s of the 20th century. According to the plan of the NKPS of the RSFSR, Rzhev was to become the largest railway junction in the Tver province, since the Leningrad - Simferopol and Moscow - Vindava directions of the October Railway intersected here. In accordance with the plan, a town was built here consisting of two-story residential barracks in which railroad workers huddled. Private wooden houses were also widely used. During the years of World War II (in 1941 - 1942 ), as a result of numerous bombing and fierce shelling by German artillery of the territories adjacent to the railway, almost all the barracks were destroyed along with most private houses located along the street.
After the war, in the 1950s - 1960s , the street was built up again. The basis of the new development was laid two, four and five-story residential buildings intended for the resettlement of railway workers: the station " Rzhev-Baltic " and the locomotive depot .
Along the street there is the necessary infrastructure: the management of the Rzhev-Baltiysky station, a polyclinic, a railway hospital, a kindergarten for children of railway workers, the Lokomotiv stadium, a railway park, trade and household enterprises.
Currently (2011), many buildings along the street arrive in poor condition, underfunding of the Oktyabrskaya Railway facilities and a deficit in the city budget are affecting it.
Attractions
- The street begins in a residential quarter of a bakery consisting of five five-story panel houses assigned to the streets of Belinsky and Vokzalnaya . The first building on Zheleznodorozhnaya Street is kindergarten No. 6 ( house No. 2a ), which miraculously ends up in the center of the quarter. To the west of the quarter, before the revolution, there was the village of Melikhovo, now only the name of the railway crossing “ Melikhovo ” and from 1st to 7th Melikhovsky lanes are mentioning this. In this part of the city, wooden private houses of the pre-war era, built in the classical Russian style, are still preserved. Similar houses can be seen along the modern Railway Street, from its beginning to Peace Street.
- At the intersection with Mira Street, there is a railway park [1] , known for its monument, a steam locomotive . The monument is the front of the SU 208-64 steam locomotive merged with a white concrete pedestal in the form of wings. This monument was erected in 1973 , in memory of the courage and heroism shown by the Rzhev railroad workers in the struggle against the Nazi invaders in the Great Patriotic War . Then, opposite the monument, the Soviet railway workers who were killed in the war were erected and stolen. Next to the monument in 2001 was built the chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker , the patron saint of all travelers, including railway workers . Alleys in the park are broken, a fountain is installed, the park is equipped with lanterns and benches for people to relax.
- On the corner of Zheleznodorozhnaya Street with Moskovsky Highway, there is a yellow pompous building of the railway hospital ( house No. 36 ). Before the construction of the central district hospital, it was the largest medical institution in the city. It serves the workers of the Rzhev railway junction and residents of the station neighborhood. The hospital is in a fairly well-groomed condition, which can not be said about the infectious case located in the backyard of the hospital. The case arrives in a running emergency state and it seems that it can no longer be restored. There, in the courtyard, you can observe the old water tower, which once supplied the hospital with water and the surrounding residential buildings. Next to the hospital is the polyclinic OZhD ( house No. 38 ).
- Near the clinic, a beautiful residential building built of red brick ( house number 40 ) catches your eye, it is popularly called "German". "German" in Rzhev called some buildings that were built or rebuilt by captured Germans immediately after the war. All these houses are considered solid and made in good faith. The Germans worked in Rzhev from 1943 until the end of 1946, and during this time they managed to put in order many city buildings. The captive Germans were kept in difficult conditions, they lived in isolation in the old building of the Rzhev prison (now SIZO No. 3 ). House No. 40, restored by 1946 and intended for the first families of the Rzhev railway workers , was built from brought trophy materials using the same trophy building documentation. It is not without reason that many note the similarity of the development of the house with the provincial German. Similar houses were also built in two military towns of Rzhev.
- At the intersection of Zheleznodorozhny and Oktyabrskaya Streets (incidentally also named after the Oktyabrskaya Railway), there are two noteworthy old buildings. This is the management building of the Rzhev-Baltiysky station ( house No. 42 ) and the now destroyed building of the first kindergarten for children of the railway workers ( house No. 47 ). The buildings are located on opposite sides of the street, opposite each other, both were built in the early 1930s in the style of constructivism, all that remains of the pre-war barracks of the railway workers. A memorial plaque in honor of the Rzhev railway workers - K. Chizhov, A. Vinogradov, A. Grigoriev and S. Arefiev, who died at a military post in the first months of World War II, is fixed on the station control building.
- Near the park of railway workers, across the road, is the largest stadium of Rzhev - Lokomotiv ( house number 47a ). During football matches, many people gather here. Of course, the Rzhev railway workers invariably remain fans of their native Lokomotiv. Footballers of the Rzhev team value their trust and are stubbornly fighting for the right to play in the group of the best teams of Russian Railways . The stadium also hosts various sports festivals, youth festivals, and theatrical performances. The peak of the stadium’s popularity occurred in Soviet times. Here, meetings with popular film actors of that time were held repeatedly, and folk artists of the USSR performed . In the coming years, the construction of a new universal sports hall [2] , which will become one of the best sports facilities in the Tver region , is planned at the Lokomotiv stadium. In addition to Lokomotiv, the city has two more large stadiums with their football teams - Horizon and Torpedo.
