The list of US diplomatic missions - the first state to officially recognize the independence of 13 North American colonies ( USA ) in December 1777, was Morocco. The first American overseas mission opened in 1779 by Benjamin Franklin was the embassy in Paris. The second was discovered in the Netherlands on April 19, 1782 by John Adams , who became the first US ambassador to the Netherlands.
