Biography

According to Hyog, he grew up under the great influence of Russian culture - especially literature and music; Maxim Gorky was his mother’s favorite writer [1] .

He was engaged in fencing as a child. In the mid-1970s, he began to practice ballet , and later worked as a dancer for some time [1] .

Hyogu gained worldwide fame in 1992, the novel “Smilla and Her Feeling of Snow,” written on behalf of a Greenland woman (this was the second novel in the chronology of the writer). He was filmed by classic Danish cinema Bill August . "Smilla and her sense of snow" was successful not only thanks to an exciting detective story, sharply twisted intrigue, a sense of style and understanding of modern life with its chaos, loneliness, depression, passion and defeats inherent in the author, but also an accurate reflection of human passions in all of them variety. At the same time, despite world-wide success and rather benevolent criticism, the novel was perceived in the literary and academic circles of Denmark primarily as a commercial project, rather than as a large literature [2] .

After the release of “Smilla”, Hög did not communicate with the press for almost ten years and practically nothing was known about him. Only later it became known that he traveled a lot, lived as a hermit, was engaged in charity work, became interested in Eastern philosophy [2] .
