Etymology
Regarding the Russian name of the island, there are two main versions. As far back as 1763, the Russian hydrograph F. I. Soimonov wrote:
At the end of the strait, as far as to the side, there is the Residential Island, but there is no housing for it. They say that because it was so named because the famous Don Cossack Stenka Razin, robbing in the Caspian Sea, lived there for some time.

According to another version, Chilov Island was renamed "Residential" in harmony. The old name of the island Chilov - Shahilan, and originally it was called Ronis (Persian name). [2]
Industry
The main industry is oil production.
The Chilov deposit, located on the island, is located in the southwestern water area of the Absheron archipelago and partially in the coastal zone. The development of Chilov began in 1948. Industrial development of the field has been underway since 1952. During the entire period of work at the field 115 wells were drilled (as of March 2010, there were 31 wells in operation).
During the Chilov development period, 4.81 million tons of oil were produced at the field. Currently, daily production is 70 tons (2010 data). The development is carried out by the oil and gas production department "May 28" of the Azneft Production Association SOCAR .
