History
The Department was created in December 2003 by dividing Canada's Department of Human Resources Development into two separate divisions: the Department and Canada's Department of Social Development. Although they still have many common functions, Canada's Department of Human Resources and Social Development focused on working-age citizens, while the second division focused on social support programs for children, families, and older people. The division gained formal legal force after the adoption of the relevant law in July 2005.
