Biography
In 1864-1869 he studied at the gymnasium in Przemysl , then he entered the Cracow School of Fine Arts (1870-1871). Having no funds for oil paints, he practiced mainly in watercolor painting.
In 1872-1873, Julian Falat left for Ukraine, worked as an artist in archaeological excavations, then in Odessa as an assistant architect .
In 1873 he went to Switzerland, then to Munich , where he studied at the Royal Bavarian Technical High School , after which in 1878 he entered the work on the construction of railways.
In the years 1878-1880, Julian Falat improved his mastery of painting at the Munich Academy under A. Strauber and Raabe. During this period of his work, he painted mainly landscapes, genre paintings and portraits.
In 1881-1886 he lived in Warsaw, made a number of trips to Italy , Spain , the Middle East , Ukraine, Zemaitiya , Lithuania . In 1886, after an exhibition in Berlin of a series of watercolors with hunting views of the princes of the Radziwills in Nesvizh , Julian Falat was appointed court painter of William II . He remained in Berlin until 1895, during which he was the organizer of the Polish art section at the International Exhibition in 1891.
In 1893, Julian Falat became a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts . He was awarded medals at exhibitions in Berlin , Munich and Vienna .
In April 1895 he was appointed director of the School of Fine Arts in Krakow , in this position he worked until 1910. He took a number of measures to reform the learning process by accepting new professors. Thanks to the efforts of Falat, the school eventually became an Academy (1900).
In 1894-1895 he actively collaborated with artists V. Kossak , J. Stanislavsky and M. Gorstkin-Vivyursky . He participated in the creation of the panorama " Berezina " ("The passage of the army of Napoleon through the Berezina in 1812", 1895).
Julian Falat was one of the founders in 1897 of the society of Polish artists "Art" (floor. "Sztuka"). He participated in almost all exhibitions of the company in the country and abroad.
In 1910 he settled in Silesia. In 1921 he became director of the Department of Culture and Art at the Ministry of Religions and Public Education.
He exhibited his works in Warsaw since 1878 (since 1890 he was a member of the Warsaw Exhibition Committee, in 1926 became his honorary member), as well as at international exhibitions, including in Paris - 1879, Berlin - 1891, Munich - 1892, Dresden and Vienna - 1894, St. Louis - 1904.
He painted mainly winter landscapes, village and hunting scenes. He became widely known mainly for watercolor works (genre scenes, hunting, winter landscapes, landscape views, historical architecture, etc.). He completed a series of drawings and illustrations of similar subjects for Polish and foreign periodicals.
Two paintings by Julian Falat were taken out of the National Museum of Poland during the fascist occupation in August 1944 and subsequently came to the United States. In 2011, the paintings were solemnly returned to the representatives of Poland. [one]
