The Theory of Four Russia
N.V. Zubarevich is the author of the so-called “theory of four Russia,” developed by her from the centripetral model of the development of space (center and periphery) that has existed in economic geography since the 1970s. In socio-economic terms, Russia is explained by its internal heterogeneity, divided into relatively developed cities and a backward province.
- Russia-1 unites Moscow and million-plus cities, in which 21% of Russia's population lives. 12 cities of the country are primarily a post-industrial society (with the exception of Omsk, Perm, Chelyabinsk, Volgograd and Ufa), the middle class of Russia is concentrated in them. The main internal migration is directed to these cities: millionaires are pulling together the population of their regions, Moscow - of the whole country. Cities with a population of over 500 thousand or over 250 thousand inhabitants (which makes up about 36% of the country's population) can be classified in this category. These people have access to jobs, markets, culture, and the Internet.
- Russia-2 unites industrial cities, single-industry towns, with a population of 20 to 250 thousand inhabitants (as well as larger industrial cities - Tolyatti , Cherepovets and others). The population of these cities, which makes up 25% of the country's population, is mainly employed in industry, is uneducated and continues to lead, according to the author, a “Soviet way of life”. The solvency of the population is low.
- Russia-3 unites the Russian countryside - small towns and villages, where 38% of the country's population lives. In these settlements, there is a reduction and aging of the population.
- Russia-4 unites the republics of the North Caucasus, Tuva and Altai, which account for 6% of the country's population. The economy of these regions is most dependent on the support of the federal center [2] .
