The Moscow Olympiad in philately is one of the subsections of such an area of thematic collection of postage stamps and stamps as Olympic philately . Collectibles within this topic are philatelic materials dedicated to the XXII Olympic Games in Moscow , their history, Olympic symbols and rituals, the game program, Olympic athletes and their sports achievements or related.
USSR issues
To popularize the Olympics-80 throughout the USSR, the Games Organizing Committee, together with the USSR Ministry of Communications, approved a plan for the production of Olympic postage stamps and postal blocks for the period 1976-1980, which included 73 postage stamps and 6 postal blocks : three stamps and one postal block in the series βOlympic Symbolsβ, 40 stamps and 5 postal blocks depicting Olympic sports and 30 stamps in the series βTourism Under the Sign of Olympic Ringsβ. It was planned to issue 229.9 million copies for 64 million rubles , actually it was issued 6.5 million marks and 3 million more. Stamps and blocks were issued with a 50 percent mark-up [1] [2] .

In the Soviet Union, many other philatelic materials were published, the subject of which was devoted to the Moscow Olympics. The USSR Ministry of Communications issued 7.8 million envelopes of 50 items, 7.8 million postcards of 13 items, 5.2 million envelopes of the first day of 56 items, 70 thousand postcards with the original stamp of 14 items [1] .

Soviet postage stamps dedicated to the Olympics-80 were included in the exposition of philatelic exhibitions held from 1977 to 1980. At the international exhibition in Frankfurt in 1978, special cancellation of Soviet stamps was carried out , and Valery Borzov and Lyudmila Turishcheva signed autographs on envelopes. The international philatelic exhibition in Essen in 1978 was attended by Lev Yashin , Boris Mayorov and Alexander Zaitsev , who talked about preparations for the Olympics, the development of sports in the USSR and the international relations of Soviet athletes [1] .
Other Country Editions
The topic of the Moscow Olympics was opened by the Austrian postal service, which issued an envelope and a stamp dedicated to the 75th session of the IOC , held in Vienna on October 22, 1974. It was there that Moscow was chosen as the capital of the Games of the XXII Olympic Games in 1980.
In 1976, Bolivia and Paraguay issued a toothless postal block and two postal blocks, which depicted the emblem of the 75th session of the IOC.
In Madrid, March 15-23, 1980, the II philatelic exhibition dedicated to sports was held. It demonstrated blocks where logos of the 1980 Summer and Winter Olympics were printed on top in the corner [43] .

The socialist countries responded to the Olympics-80 in the most active way. The postal blocks of the GDR , Hungary , Gabon , Mongolia , North Korea , Vietnam , China , and Poland were issued.
