Facts and Fiction
According to Eco, “the heroes of this novel are not imaginary. With the exception of the protagonist, they all actually lived, including his grandfather, the author of a mysterious message for Abbot Barruel , which gave rise to all modern anti-Semitism . ”
Eco continues:
The nineteenth century was full of monstrous and mysterious events: the mysterious death of Ippolito Nievo , the falsification of the Protocols of the Sions of Zion , which inspired Hitler to exterminate the Jews, the Dreyfus affair and the endless intrigues organized by the secret police of different countries, masons, Jesuit conspiracies and other events whose authenticity can never be installed, but which serve as forage for feuilleton 150 years later.
Other real-life characters in the novel are Sigmund Freud , Leo Taxil , Eugene Sue and Maurice Joli . The main topics are conspiracy theories , freemasonry and palladism , or devil worship .
Eco fills the novel with other books, explores 19th century novels, from which information was taken in the Protocols of Zion, structured into a single essay. The spirit of the novel was Alexander Dumas, the father , in particular, the roll call with his novel "Joseph Balsamo" (1846) is visible.
