Author of essays on the history and ethnography of the western provinces of Russia and the Caucasus, compiler of ethnographic maps and craniological tables, participant in the compilation of the monumental work Ethnographic Description of the Peoples of Russia, published in 1862 under the editorship of Gustav-Theodore Pauli .
The monumental work “The Languages of the Caucasian Tribes” published the first materials in Caucasian linguistics on Caucasian languages and dialects: Volume 1 includes a dictionary (545 words), Volume 2 short grammar essays and translation of phrases (169 sentences and combinations) in 30 languages and dialects of three autochthonous Caucasian language families:
- Nakh-Dagestan (“Lezgin”): Avar, Andean, Karatin, Dido, Lak, Varkun, Kubachi, Kaitag, Akushin, Hurkilin, Udin, Kyurin, Rutul, Tsakhur, Agul, Tabasaran, Bukhu, Jack, Khchin,
- Abkhaz-Adyghe ("Circassian"): Abadzekh, Kabardian, Shapsug, Abkhaz
- Kartvelian: Igniloy, Georgian, Mingrelian, Laz, Svan
