History

The first issue of Theology Today magazine came out in April 1944 . The editorial of the first issue contained a declaration entitled “Our Goals”, containing 4 goals set by the magazine, which was composed by the founder and editor-in-chief of the publication John Mackay , and part-time, and the president of Princeton Theological Seminary , and then approved by the publishing board. The goals were as follows [1] :

  1. “To facilitate the return of theology to the modern world, as a significant science, which will be equally needed by both religion and culture for its revival”
  2. “To study the key provisions of the Christian faith and life, and to state their essence in an understandable and accessible language”
  3. “Reexamine the truths revealed during the Protestant Reformation, especially the tradition commonly referred to as Reformed , and show its relevance to contemporary issues facing the church and society”
  4. “Create a print publication in which Christians whose faith is rooted in the revelation of God , which is contained in the Bible and in Jesus Christ , and who engage in various fields of mental activity, can combine their views on human life in the light of God, in order to explain our human life circumstances and the Christian philosophy of life.
Original text
  1. "To contribute to the restoration of theology in the world of today as the supreme science, of which both religion and culture stand in need for their renewal."
  2. "To study the central realities of Christian faith and life, and to set forth their meaning in clear and appropriate language."
  3. "To explore afresh the truths which were rediscovered by the Protestant Reformation, especially the tradition usually called Reformed, and to show their relevancy to the contemporary problems of the Church and society."
  4. "To provide an organ in which Christians whose faith is rooted in the revelation of God in the Bible and in Jesus Christ, and who are engaged in different spheres of intellectual activity, may combine their insights into the life of man in the light of God , with a view to interpreting our human situation and developing a Christian philosophy of life. "

Seven years later, the magazine “firmly took its place in the world of religious thought” ( English “achieved an established place in the world of religious thought” ), and Hugh Thompson Kerr became the chief editor of the publication, and John Mackay took the chair of the chairman of the publishing council. [2]

Changes occurred in the following years. So long-term member of the publishing council Friedrich William Dillinston made a review of current issues and events that theologians faced during his tenure. Among other things, he noted the demolition of the partitions by the Second Vatican Council and the inclusion of Roman Catholic scholars in the publishing council. Catholic authors of scientific articles and reviewers make a worldwide contribution to the development of Theology Today [3]

Today the chair of the editor-in-chief is Gordon S. Mikoski Doctor of Philosophy , Associate Professor ( Eng. Assistant Professor ) of the Faculty of Applied Theology, Princeton Theological Seminary and president of the Association of Applied Theology. [four]
