According to the US Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 1278.2 km², of which 1104 km² (86.38%) is land and 174.2 km² (13.62%) is water.

According to the 2000 census [5] , 500,265 people, 127,153 families lived in the okrug, there were 188,935 households and 199,521 houses. The average population density was about 488.1 people per square kilometer. According to the census, the racial makeup of the county was as follows: 73.12% White , 20.22% Black or African American , 0.20% Native American , 2.59% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 1.62% are representatives of mixed races, 2.22% are of other nationalities. Hispanics accounted for 5.26% of all residents in the county.
Of the 188,935 households, 32.50% raised children under the age of 18, 49.60% were married couples, 13.40% of families had women without husbands, 32.70% did not have families. 25.70% of the total number of families at the time of the census lived independently, while 8.50% were single elderly people aged 65 years and older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.09.
According to the 2000 census, the population of the district according to the age range was as follows: 24.90% - residents under 18 years of age, 10.30% - between 18 and 24 years old, 31.50% - from 25 to 44 years old, 21.70% - from 45 to 64 years old and - at the age of 65 years and older. The average age of residents was 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males, while for every hundred females 18 years and older, there are 90.8 males also over 18 years old.
The average household income per household in the district was $ 52,419, and the average household income was $ 62,144. At the same time, men had an average income of $ 42,541 per year, compared to $ 31,829 of the average annual income for women. The per capita income for the district was $ 25,413 a year.
