Confederation of Ireland ( Ir. Cónaidhm Chaitliceach na hÉireann ) - the period of Irish self-government between the Irish uprising of 1641 and the conquest of Ireland by Cromwell in 1649. During this period, two-thirds of Ireland was ruled by the Irish Catholic Confederation, also known as the Kilkenny Confederation (named for its main city, Kilkenny). In the rest of the territory there were enclaves ruled by Protestants ( Ulster , Munster , Lenster ), captured by loyal royalist troops during the War of the Three Kingdoms. The Confederates did not succeed in resisting the advance of the English army during the conflict of 1642–1649 (known as the Irish Confederate Wars ), so in 1648 they joined the royalists against the puppet parliament.
