Volkhovsky whitefish. Coin of the Bank of Russia - Series: Red Book, silver, 1 ruble, 2005
Body length up to 55 cm; weight up to 1.5 kg. Belongs to lake-river whitefish with rare short gill stamens. On the first branchial arch they have no more than 29 stamens. Ichthyologists subdivide the Volkhov whitefish into two forms: the typical blunt-nosed, with a short and wide snout, and the sharp-pointed. After the construction of the Volkhov hydroelectric power station in October 1926, it is on the verge of extinction due to the inability to reach the spawning grounds. The sigol population is supported by artificial breeding at the Volkhov fish farm.
