History
In 1872, on a piece of land allocated by the Samoan supreme leader Mauga to the Americans [2] , a captain of the 3rd rank R.V. Midi founded the U.S. coal port. In 1900-1951 it was a busy naval base, now it is a regular port for calling ships of various types. On September 29, 2009, a tsunami hit the city, caused by an underwater earthquake of magnitude 8.3 120 km south of the Pacific Ocean. The tsunami caused significant damage to the city and all the settlements of the archipelago, killing a large number of lives and destroying many villages.
Economics
The main export crop is canned tuna. The opening in 1964 of an international airport, partially built on a coastal reef, caused a significant increase in the flow of tourists [2] . Pago Pago, described in Somerset Maugham 's story Rain, as a provincial city with a hot and humid climate, is now a residential and industrial center. The urban agglomeration of the city consists of several villages, including Fagaty - the location of the legislative and judicial authorities, and - the location of the executive authorities.
Education
In Pago Pago there is a public library named after Feleti Barstov [3] . The library, built in 1998, acquired a modern look after restoration on April 17, 2000 [4] .
