Before the Pontificate Borghese
The clan originates from the Sienese merchant Tiezzo da Monticchiano (XIII century), or rather - from his nephew named Borghezi. Agostino Borghese (1390-1462) faithfully served Pius II , for which he was awarded the title of count . Niccolo Borghese (1432-1500) - philosopher and humanist of the Siena Republic. Pietro Borghese (1469-1527) - Roman senator, died during the plunder of Rome by the Imperials .
Marcantonio I (1504-74) strengthened the position of the family among the Roman elite, and his son Camillo was elected pope in 1605 under the name of Paul V. A well-known champion of nepotism , Paul V bestowed the eldest brother the ducal title, the younger - the management of the castle of St. Angela and Borgo . Over the 16 years of his reign, Borghese has become the largest landowner of the Roman Campania .
Particularly, Paul V approached his nephew, Shipione Borghese , who received a cardinal hat and gathered in his villa in Pincho one of the richest art collections in Italy, now known as the Borghese gallery . Among the gems of the Shipione collection are the antique statues of Apollo Savrokton , Borghese Wrestler , and Ares Borghese .
After the Pontificate
Another nephew of the pope, Marcantonio II (1598-1658), received from the Spanish king a whole handful of hereditary titles, including the title of Prince Sulmon, which his descendants still wear to this day. Borghese entrenched among the " black nobility " through marriage with representatives of the papal dynasties of Orsini , Colonna , Aldobrandini and Odescalchi . After the extinction of the genus Aldobrandini, the youngest branch of the family in 1769 adopted this glorious name.
Generation after generation Borghese wore the family names of Marcantonio, Camillo and Shipione. In 1803, Prince Camillo Borghese married Pauline Bonaparte , Napoleon's sister, and, under pressure from the latter, sold him the artistic treasures of his ancestors. The crowned couple did not have children.
Of the later Borghese, the famous industrialist Shipione Borghese , who won the legendary Beijing-Paris rally (1907) and married the only daughter of medium Maria Annenkova , and his nephew Junio ββValerio Borghese , who served in the Italian Navy during the 2nd World War and led the naval unit saboteurs (suspected in the post-war period of organizing the demolition of the battleship Novorossiysk in the harbor of Sevastopol), who founded in 1967 the far-right National Front .
