The river is 401 km long [2] , which makes it the third largest in South Korea. The pool area is 9859 km². [3] In the upper part, the river is slower and passes through the Noren mountains, characterized by an extensive and winding stream. On the other hand, in its middle and lower parts, the flow becomes smoother and relatively less tortuous.
Several small alluvial plains, including the Honam and Nonsan plains, form tributaries of the Kymgan. They are constituted by such rivers as Kapcheon, Yuguchon, Myochcheon, Unsancheon, Soxoncheon and Nosancheon.
