Androsphinx (“muzhhesfinks”, from the Greek. Andr-, which means “ man , man, male” and Greek. “Sphinx”, Σφίγξ, Σφιγγός, “strangler”) [1] - a kind of sphinx with a person’s head, which distinguished him from sphinxes with the head of a falcon ( hieracosphinx ) and a ram ( cryosphinx ).

With this word, the ancient Greek historian Herodotus , who traveled to Egypt in the middle of the 5th century. BC e., called the image of the pharaohs with the body of a man, the head of a lion and a geometrical form of a beard (a sign of royal power).

Although the ancient Greek sphinxes also had a human body, they were obviously female, therefore, in the literature of art, the term Andro-Sphinx is usually used to describe Egyptian monuments.
