In March 2008, during excavations in a quarry near the city of Zhucheng , Shandong Province , bones belonging to prehistoric animals were found. In addition to the fossils of many species, a skeleton of a huge hadrosaurid was found. The excavation area was 20 m². After a thorough study of the remains, it was concluded that the bones of the giant dinosaur belong to a new species, and differ from other species - Shantungosaurus and Zhuchengosaurus .
In 2011, a scientific description was published, sponsored by: Zhao Xijin , Wang Kebai and Li Dunjing . A new species of dinosaur was named Huaxiaosaurus aigahtens . The genus name comes from Huaxia - the ancient name of China. The species epithet is given in Chinese, 巨大 ( jù dà ), and means "giant." Aigahtens is identical to the Latin word giganteus . Huaxiaosaurus should not be confused with Huaxiasaurus , currently labeled nomen nudum and later named Huaxiagnathus .
Fossil remains consist of a fairly complete skeleton with a skull. Bones were found in the Xingezhuang geological strata dating from the Campanian . Preserved: the left thigh, the middle part of the lower jaw, most of the spine, shoulder girdle, forelimbs, pelvis and hind limbs.
Huaxiaosaurus is one of the largest hadrosaurids ever discovered, with a length of 18.7 meters. The reconstructed skeleton reaches a height of 11.3 meters [2] .
