Biography

Born July 17, 1929 in Arta , Greece , where he received his primary education.

In 1951 he graduated from the theological school of the University of Athens and, after graduating from it, served as an officer in the Greek army until 1954, and later worked for two years as a preacher and catechist in a high school.

On June 26, 1956, he was tonsured a monk at the Monastery of Limonos , 14 km from the city of Kalloni on the island of Lesbos . On June 29, Metropolitan Constantine of Mithymia (Kardamenis) was ordained hierodeacon and was appointed preacher of the Mithymian metropolis .

On June 12, 1960 he was ordained to the rank of hieromonk with the elevation of the rank of archimandrite .

From 1965 to 1968 he served as a military priest in the Greek army. In 1968 he was appointed protosingel of the Athenian Archbishopric and rector of the Annunciation Cathedral in Athens. In December 1973, of his own free will, he was transferred to the post of rector of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the area of Papagu in northern Athens.

In 1975, he volunteered to serve in Korea, which at that time was part of the New Zealand Metropolis of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. On September 23, 1975, Metropolitan Dionysius of New Zealand (Psiahas) was appointed rector of the St. Nicholas Church in Seoul and head of the Orthodox Eastern Mission of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. According to my own memories:

The first days I lived in a hotel, and then began to rent an apartment. Living conditions were terrible, and, unfortunately, all the first years I continued to experience similar difficulties. There was no heating in the then-only Orthodox church of St. Nicholas in the entire region. In addition, I did not know the Korean language and experienced especially serious problems with the lack of church books. Another issue was the search for the necessary financial resources.

- Honorary Citizen of Seoul [1]

In 1980, Archimandrite Sotirius received an assistant in his missionary ministry - priest Daniel Na. In 1981, the Busan Mission Center was opened, and in 1982, St. Nicholas Orthodox Seminary was founded in Seoul, with 12 people being the first to attend [2] .

In 1986, he was appointed chief administrator of the Orthodox Eastern Mission of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, where under his leadership the Transfiguration Monastery was founded in Kapyong, temples in Busan , Incheon , Jeonju and Palangli , a chapel in Ulsan , as well as missions in India , Hong Kong , Singapore , Indonesia and in the Philippines .

In February 1993, by a decision of the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, he was elected vicar of the New Zealand Metropolitanate with the title of Bishop of Zilon and residing in Korea. The hierarchal ordination was performed on March 21, 1993.

In 1995, he headed the newly formed missionary Korean exarchate, which was transformed into the Korean metropolitanate of the Patriarchate of Constantinople on April 20, 2004 [3] . On June 20, 2004, in the Seoul Nicholas Cathedral, the Bishop of Sotiri was intronized by the first Metropolitan of Korea.

In the summer of 2005, he visited Russia, visiting Vladivostok , Diveevo , Moscow , Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra , Khotkovo and bowed to many Orthodox shrines. On August 30, in the Department for External Church Relations, he met with the Deputy Chairman of the DECR MP, Bishop Mark Egorievsky (Golovkov) [4] .

In May 2008, in connection with the operations and his state of health, he sent letters to Korean believers in which he expressed a desire to retire, and also said that he had appealed to the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Holy Synod with a request to relieve him of his duties as Metropolitan of Korea. Metropolitan Sotirius intended to remain at rest in the monastery of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Kapyöng, and, as the abbot of the monastery, help the nuns of the monastery to translate liturgical texts into Korean [5] .

In accordance with the petition, by the decision of the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Holy Synod of May 28, 2008, he was put to rest in the Korean metropolis and was appointed the acting titular metropolitan of Pisidia , the wastim and exarch of Antalya and Sidi.

In the summer of 2008, in accordance with Korean traditions, the 80th anniversary of Metropolitan Sotirius was solemnly celebrated: in Korea, it is customary to add another year to the true year of birth, since nine months spent in the womb are considered to be a year of human life [2] .

Following the call of the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew to increase the number of clergymen who have Turkish citizenship, which would allow them to participate in the elections of the Patriarch of Constantinople in the future, I received a passport of a Turkish citizen [6] .

On November 6, 2018, Metropolitan Sotiriy urged the Orthodox Christians living in Turkey to ignore the decision of the Russian Orthodox Church to break off relations with the Patriarchate of Constantinople and regarded this decision as “satanic” [7] .
