Yeo characterizes the picture as an “incredible love story” against the backdrop of “political confusion” [12] . The French weekly news magazine Paris Match shared the opinion of the actress, calling the film an amazing love story between her deceased husband Michael Airis and a woman who sacrifices personal happiness for her people [13] [14] . Yeo also called the tape "work of love", admitting that playing the Nobel laureate was scary [15] . US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton watched the film before meeting Aung San Suu Kyi. [16] After this meeting, she publicly recommended “Lady” to be shown to viewers who would never have the chance to be given the opportunity Luke Besson and Michelle Yeo gave her: “It was an exciting experience for me, and I think it will be the same for you ” [17] .

Story
In 1947, when Aung San Suu Kyi was two years old, her father Aung San led Myanmar to independence. But soon, July 19, 1947, he, together with a group of his colleagues, was killed by a military death squad [18] . Having matured, she left for England, got married and was happy with her family. But in 1988, her mother’s poor health forces her to return to her homeland, where her father, Aung Sang, is still remembered and honored.
When she visits her mother in the hospital in 1988, she meets many people who were seriously injured during the protests of the democratic opposition, which were brutally suppressed by the armed forces of Myanmar . She understands that political changes are necessary in the country, and soon enters into a democratic movement to promote reforms [19] . She assumes the role of a symbol in support of the self-determination of Burmese people and devotes herself to the struggle for political freedoms [20] .
Suu Kyi founds a political party and wins the 1990 elections with a huge advantage. However, the Burmese military junta does not recognize the election results, cancels its results and takes Suu Kyi under strict control. She is separated from her family and kept under house arrest for more than a decade. Husband and children are prohibited from entering the country [21] [22] . The family begins to fight for the recognition of Suu Kyi outside Myanmar - this will serve as a guarantee that they will not forget about her and she will not disappear unnoticed.
Thanks to the efforts of her family, she becomes the first woman in Asia to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize [23] . But she still can’t meet with her family and attend the ceremony, and her husband Michael Eiris was not able to see her for the last time before her early death [24] .

Background
Rebecca Fryn began work on the project after she and her husband, producer Andy Harris ( Queen , Damned United ), visited Myanmar in the early 1990s [25] . Harris's production company Left Bank Pictures began work on the script in 2008, codenamed Freedom from Fear. [26] Harris wanted to see Michelle Yeo in the lead role and sent her the script [25] . The actress was intrigued because she always wanted to play Suu Kyi [27] [28] . She flew to London only to meet with the producers [29] . The script was English and told the story exclusively through the eyes of Michael Ayris , but Michelle Yeo brought the Asian point of view into the script [30] .
Her husband, Jean Todt (who later participated in the project as an accredited producer) advised her to contact her friend Luke Besson [31] [32] [33] . She was already about the director of high opinion for the fact that he had previously shot films about strong women [34] . Besson immediately accepted the script, although he was aware of the fact that he would have to apply all his directorial experience, acquired over many years of work [35] . Besson was attracted by the opportunity to finally tell the story of a real heroine, a female wrestler who does not own any other weapons besides her human dignity [36] . During the filming of the film, there was news about the removal of a house arrest from Aung San Suu Kyi. Besson refused to believe in what he saw on television, since it was very similar to the events that took place in the already shot material [37] .
Yeo used her free time to visit Suu Kyi immediately [38] . She later said that it was like visiting a dear family member [39] . When they discussed the film, the actress seemed to be still on the set, since Luke Besson had copied the house very accurately [40] [41] . The leader of the National League for Democracy honored the actress with a hug [42] . On June 22, 2011, Yeo wanted to visit Suu Kyi for the second time, but was expelled from Myanmar. [43] However, Luke Besson was allowed to meet with the heroine of his film [44] . She said she would be embarrassed when watching, but, nevertheless, asked for a copy [45] .
Michelle Yeo later expressed great gratitude to Thai partners, such as Siam Movies , for their support by donating funds to the Chaipattana Foundation on the occasion of the release of the film in Thailand [46] .
Reliability
Rebecca Frain
Rebecca Fryn personally interviewed many people close to Suu Kyi to write a script based on the facts [47] [48] . While some agreed to be interviewed only on condition that the sources were not disclosed, brother-in-law Suu Kyi Anthony Ayris openly admired her work [49] .
Michelle Yeo
Yeo watched about 200 hours of audio-visual material about Suu Kyi and took Burmese language lessons in order to convey the role as accurately as possible [50] . Her talent for learning languages can be appreciated when in the film, she makes a historical speech by Suu Kyi in Burmese [51] . The actress also improved her piano skills [52] . Despite the fact that she was always distinguished by her miniature and slimness, Michel Yeo significantly lost weight for the most accurate embodiment on the screen of the image of Su Ji, whose son noticed that his mother was thinner than an Asian star [53] [54] . In addition, Yeo, in an interview with the New York Post , said that the costumes she wears in the film are traditional Burmese clothing made from silk and cotton [55] . Luke Besson stated that later Michelle Yeo “copied Su Ji's appearance and the nuances of her personality so well that the differences between the real person and the heroine depicted in the film were almost invisible when they intersected in reality.” [56] .
Luke Besson
Under the leadership of Luc Besson, his team also strove for maximum accuracy. When building a copy of Su Ji’s house, even the cardinal points were taken into account so that the audience could see the sunrise as the mistress of a real house. Based on satellite images and approximately 200 family photographs, they built an accurate, 1: 1 scale model of the house [57] . Luke Besson himself traveled to Myanmar, explored the area and made covert shooting [58] . To achieve ultimate reliability, the director hired a large number of Burmese actors for both important roles and extras [59] . Some of them, like Thein Win, reproduced their own memories on the screen [60] . The shooting had to be stopped several times, since Michel Yeoh’s speeches (in Burmese) led to outbursts of emotions from those extras who were present at the real speeches of Suu Kyi [61] .
Andy Harris
Andy Harris focused his efforts on authenticating the British part of his wife’s screenplay. He achieved the utmost precision regarding a happy time in Suu Kyi's life when she lived with her family in the United Kingdom. Their apartment was also recreated in the filming pavilion, but there are several scenes in the film that were shot in front of a real house [62] . Scenes depicting Michael Airis dying of cancer were also shot in a real hospital [63] .
Critics' rating
The film received mostly negative reviews from film critics and on the Rotten Tomatoes website has 1.5 stars out of five possible [64] . The Telegraph 's Robbie Collin called the biopic “a weak imitation of an inspired democracy activist” [65] , while Roger Ebert awarded the movie 2.5 stars out of five possible, highlighting the strong acting performance of Michelle Yeo and David Thewlis and advising Besson not to shoot anymore biographical tapes [66] . Keith Ahlich ( Time Out Chicago ) called "Lady" a deliberately embellished biographical film [67] . David Rooney ( The Hollywood Reporter ) praised Thierry Arbogast's cinematography for a beautiful picture, South Asian landscapes, pleasantly contrasted with gray stone Oxford [68] . Annabelle Udo O'Malley, in an article for Asian Week, praised the film as “definitely worthy of attention” for its “beautiful camera work” and soundtrack [69] . David Stratton ( Australian Broadcasting Corporation ) spoke about the incarnation of Michelle Yeaho as the protagonist: “Su, Michelle Yeaho is beautifully portrayed as the epitome of grace and tranquility, and her long-suffering supporters follow her example” [70] .
Melissa Silverstein ( indieWire ) described “Michael’s campaign to convince the committee to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Su so that they know about her and fight for her safety” as one of the highlights of the film. The critic especially highlighted the scene in which “one of Su Ji’s sons accepts the award on her behalf, and she listens to her son’s speech on the radio thousands of miles from there.” Silverstein found this scene “touching” [71] . Julia Suryakuzuma ( The Jakarta Post ) admitted that the picture brought her to tears [72] . Summer J. Holiday ( Working Author ) defines “Lady” as “the combined action of the harsh reality of modern military occupation and the effect that this reality has on everyone” [73] . University of Hong Kong explained that “cinema is pushing us to explore the problems of democracy, freedom and other problems of humanity.” This was said before the film was shown at the university, after which the film was discussed with Luke Besson, Michelle Yeo and Professor Ian Holiday [74] .
