The reservoir is named after the famous German politician and businessman Friedrich Wilhelm Harcourt .
The reservoir began to be built in the late 1920s with the aim of playing the role of a sedimentation tank of suspended particles - due to a decrease in the speed of the Ruhr flow, self-purification of water occurred. This helped solve the problem of water supply, when the demand for drinking water grew rapidly, and the pollution of the Ruhr water was constantly increasing. The filling of the reservoir took place in 1931 .
Currently, the reservoir also serves as a popular holiday destination. A bicycle path has been laid along the northern shore, which is part of the Ruhr Bicycle Route route. In the summer, the pleasure boat Friedrich Harcourt runs along the reservoir, there is a rental point for boats and pedal boats.
Vetter Castle is located on the north shore of Harcourtz, and Verdringen Castle is on the south.
The Kharkortze Reservoir is the thematic point “The Way of Industrial Culture” of the Ruhr Region .
