History

Founded in 1957 by film distributor Irving Levin ( English Irving "Bud" Levin ). The film festival began with good intentions to provide a place for the city of San Francisco on the stage of world culture, as well as to show cinema to the citizens as an art form. [3]

Americans saw foreign films. An important work for this was done by the film festival. Among the films that were shown at the first festival were “The Throne in the Blood ” by Akira Kurosawa and “The Song of the Road ” by Satyajit Ray .

One of the obstacles in the early years was the lack of support from large Hollywood studios. Vorotil from the movie scared the looming threat of the arrival of foreign films on the market. The studios were also afraid that the festival would draw attention and money from Oscar. [4] Everything has changed since 1959. That year, the film showed the big American film Beloved Pagan ( English Beloved Infidel ), directed by Henry King , in which Gregory Peck and Deborah Kerr played.
