The venue of the first Magic Circus Show in December 2009 was the Christmas Circus, which seats almost three thousand spectators, in Geneva, Switzerland . The venue of the first show was not chosen by chance, since in November 2009, Geneva was elected by the European Circus Association and the World Circus Federation as the capital of the International Year of the Circus in 2010 [2] .

In Switzerland, the circus is one of the most popular forms of entertainment and art. More than 40 circuses work in this small country, as well as about 50 circus schools, 27 of them merged into the National Federation in 2004 [3] .

History

The idea to make a magical circus performance, in which all the numbers are performed by children, was presented at the Eurovision TV Congress in May 2009 by the Swiss national television company RTS and Damien Otte, the executive producer of 7 Street Productions and the director of children's programs RTS. The European Broadcasting Union responded to the proposal with enthusiasm, and in the spring of 2010 the selection of participants for the premiere release of the program started.

“This is a unique experience for us, as the circus program was first developed as part of Eurovision entertainment programs. It is amazing and incredible to see children from different countries of Europe united by one common passion - to the circus ... This is only the beginning, and we hope that the transfer will become a great European tradition! ”
Nadia Burckhardt, Project Manager

The main organizers were the Swiss national television company RTS and 7 Street Productions in collaboration with five national broadcasters - French France 3, Portuguese RTP, Netherlands Tros, VRT Belgian and Russian VGTRK .

Ukraine, Belarus, Italy, Slovenia, as well as international French-language television TV5 Monde, including the Canadian TV5 Canada, bought the rights to broadcast the show.

Format

The first show allowed the participation of children aged 6 to 15 years and the participation of no more than four circus acts from one country. The winner of the 2010 show was not determined, because the show is not broadcast live, but is recorded in advance and shown in the participating countries after the Catholic Christmas.

More than 60 children, including equilibrists, illusionists, acrobats, jugglers, clowns and aerialists, from Switzerland, France, Portugal, Russia, the Netherlands and Belgium performed bright numbers that reflect the various circus traditions of Europe. Performances were selected based on national selections at the beginning of the year. The goal of the show is not to determine the winner, but to show the diversity of circus culture in Europe with the help of performances of talented young children.

The show is positioned as a show for young viewers and family viewing, which is broadcast during the New Year and Christmas holidays, and clown sketches and the music of Magic Circus Orchestra are connected in one performance.
