History
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 during the establishment of the departments as part of the then “Colmar District”. With the creation of districts on February 17, 1800 , the canton was re-subordinated in a new way as part of Colmar County.
From 1871 to 1919, the German Empire was not divided into cantons and there was no “Guebwiller district”, but there was a single imperial province of Alsace-Lorraine without divisions into cities and communities.
From June 28, 1919, the canton Ruffac again became part of Guebwiller County. Before the 2015 reform, eight communes administratively belonged to the canton.
Geographical position
The canton is bordered in the north by the canton of Winthinheim of the District of Colmar , in the east by the canton of Ensimeim of the Guebwiller district, in the south by the canton of Suls-O-Ren of the Guebwiller district, in the south-west by the canton of the Guebwiller of the Guebwiller district and in the west by the canton of Munster .
