Abung (self-name), orang abung, lampung, lampong - the people in Indonesia , in the south of the island of Sumatra (Lampung Province). The number of 300 000 people. ( 1992 ). Migrated to the territory of the modern settlement from the highlands in the western part of southern Sumatra in the 15th century. The Abung culture was affected by long contacts with the pubs (Pabans), the indigenous population of South Sumatra, the Pamingers and Maringgai, people from Central Sumatra and Java, Javanese and Sundians living in Lampung. Abung is similar in material culture to the Malays.
The main occupation is manual and plowed agriculture (dry rice, pepper). In some areas, developed fishing. They keep buffaloes, small breeds of cattle, goats, and poultry. The permanent settlement is surrounded by seasonal farms. The dwelling is frame-pillar, pile, rectangular, with a saddle-shaped roof, surrounded by an open veranda. Each village has a communal house of up to 500 m².
Abung are divided into 19 localized tribes (buvay), consisting of patrilineal clans (bitch), headed by chiefs (penimbang) and forming clan segments in the rural community (tiah). There were slavery, class division, head hunting. A marriage is patrilocal, a kinship account is patrilineal, a levirate is practiced, occasionally a polygyny. Remains of traditional cults, initiations, potlatch and prestigious ceremonies.
