Karaiskakis, Spyridon

Spiridon Karaiskakis ( Greek Σπυρίδων Καραϊσκάκης ; 1826 , Kalamos , Ionian Islands - 1899 , Athens ) - Greek major general and politician of the second half of the 19th century [1] .

Biography

Spiridon Karaiskakis was born in 1826 on the island of Kalamos, which was then under British control. On this island, his father, the hero of the War of Liberation of 1821-1829, Karaiskakis, Georgios , kept his family safe during the war years. His mother, Enkolpiya, also belonged to the well-known family of artholes Skilodimos [1] .

After the reconstruction of the Greek state, he was sent to Munich with a scholarship from King Otto and in 1842 entered the Greek officer school. In his military career he achieved the rank of major general .

During the Crimean War, took part in the uprising of 1854 in Epirus (see Greece during the Crimean War ). Later he took part in the elimination of robbery in the territory of the Greek kingdom. In 1862, after the deposition of Otto, being in the few retinue of the king and the rank of captain, he followed King Otton to Germany [2] .

He returned to Greece in 1864 and became one of three candidates for the heads of the National Guard in Athens [2] .

In 1884 he was appointed head of the garrison of Kerkyra . Subsequently, he took command of the 3rd Army Corps. He took part in the liberation of Thessaly in the rank of colonel .

At the same time he was involved in politics and in 1865 was elected to parliament. He was re-elected deputy in 1875 and headed the Ministry of War in the government of Kumunduros [2] . Since that time, he was continuously elected to parliament until 1884 , when, after imposing restrictions on the participation of officers in politics, he left his deputy mandate to return to the Greek army.

By this time, he was three times Minister of War in the governments of Trikupis of 1878 , 1880 and 1882 , when he resigned from his post as minister [2] .

Major General Spiridon Karaiskakis died in 1899 in Athens. He was married to the great-granddaughter of Varvakis and had two daughters and one son.
