Biography

Member of the Christian Democratic Party of Italy since 1951, representative of the Nuove Cronache group, led by Amintore Fanfani . Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Parliament since 1958

  • 1963-1964 and 1966-1968 - Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade,
  • 1968 - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs,
  • 1968-1969 - Secretary of State for Budget,
  • 1969-1970 - Minister for State Property,
  • 1970 - Minister for Postal Affairs and Telecommunications of Italy,
  • 1970-1972 - Chairman of the European Commission, at the same time - European Commissioner for Italy. It was during his tenure that negotiations on joining the EEC of Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark and Norway were completed. The issue of enhancing economic integration and monetary policy coordination was also resolved. He resigned to help the KDP in preparing for the general election,
  • 1972-1973 - Chairman of the Committee on Budget and Finance of the Chamber of Deputies,
  • 1973-1978 - Minister of education,
  • 1978-1979 - Minister of Finance,
  • 1979-1980 - Foreign Secretary. He resigned for health reasons.

In 1987, he was the head of the Italian parliamentary delegation at meetings of the Council of Europe and the Western European Union, and since 1989, he was the head of the political secretariat of Christian Democrats.

His family donated their vast library to the University of Perugia.
