Moscow articles

The Moscow articles of 1665 are an agreement signed in Moscow by the hetman Ivan Bryukhovetsky and the tsarist government. Bryukhovetsky, granted the boyar title for the defense of Glukhov in Moscow, made significant concessions to the tsar’s power in the new treaty, and also signed under him a “serf” and not a “faithful servant and subject”, as his predecessors did.

Under the agreement, the political rights of the Zaporizhzhya Troops were significantly limited, and its financial and military-administrative dependence on Russia increased. Little Russian cities and lands were proclaimed the direct possessions of the tsar. The hetman was forbidden to enter into diplomatic relations with foreign states, and the election of the hetman should be held only with the permission of the tsar and in the presence of Russian ambassadors. To get kleynodov, the newly elected hetman was obliged to go to Moscow. The number of tsarist troops in Ukraine increased, which were supposed to be supported by the local population. Russian governors took responsibility for the collection of taxes. At the same time, the Kiev Metropolitanate became subordinate to the Moscow Patriarchate . Articles guaranteed a return to some Little Russian cities of Magdeburg Law .

The conclusion of the Moscow articles increased the discontent of the Bryukhovetsky in the Hetman and accelerated his overthrow. Subsequently, the hetman Demyan Mnogoshinniy concluded with the Russian kingdom Glukhovsky articles more favorable from the point of view of the Hetman.
