Earl of Buchan ( Earl of Buchan ), one of the oldest noble titles in Scotland .
History
The title was formed at the beginning of the XII century and dates back to the ancient home of the Mormers of Buchan. The Deer Book is the only source of information about the early Mormrus of the Buchan and lists several names, but the chronology of inheritance is not precisely known. The first mormer of Buchan was Gartnach, he lived during the reign of Alexander II and died no earlier than 1132 . He was succeeded by the daughter Eve, who married a certain Kolban, and he inherited the title through marriage. Then the title passed to their son Roger, then to his son Fergus, who had a single daughter named Margaret. After her marriage with William Comyn, her husband also became known as the Count of Buchan, and their son Alexander Comin inherited the title of the 6th Earl. He, in turn, inherited the son of John Comin. He was in opposition to Robert the Bruce , and after the victory of the latter, lost the title and was expelled to England .
In 1323, Henry de Beaumont claimed his title and received it after the death of Randolph, Count Morey and regent of Scotland, but three years later, in 1335, the Scots captured him and after paying a huge ransom, Beaumont was allowed to return to England. The next title holder was Alexander Stewart , the son of King Robert II , who for his cruelty was nicknamed the Badenoch Wolf . In 1394, he died without leaving a legitimate heir, and the title passed to his brother, Robert Stewart , 1st Duke of Albany, and after Robert's death, to his second son, John Stewart , an eminent commander of his time. Then the title was confiscated by Jacob II .
In 1444, the county of Buchan was granted by Jacob I to her daughter Maria on the occasion of her marriage with Wolfert VI van Borselene . Since both sons of this marriage were minors, after the death of Mary, possession returned to the crown [1] [2] .
In 1469, Jacob III granted the title (English version - Earl Buchan) to his uncle - James Stewart, the second son of Sir James Stewart, who was called the Black Knight of Lorna , from Joanne Beaufort , the widow of Jacob I. Then the title was inherited by his son Alexander, and then his grandson, John. 3rd Earl of Buchan, inherited granddaughter named Christina. She married Robert Douglas, and the document of 1574 certified the right to transfer the title to their common descendants. Thus, James, the son of Christina and Robert, became the 5th Earl. Married to Margaret Ogilvy, he gave birth to an only child, a daughter named Mary. She inherited the title after the death of her father in 1601. Mary married James Erksin, son of the 2nd Earl of Mara , and through this marriage became the 6th Earl of Buchan. Further, the title was inherited by their descendants.
