Birth Circumstances

The Bible only says that Cain “knew his wife”, her name is not called (in the Byron mystery “Cain” the main character’s wife is called Ada, but this name was borrowed from the poet by his wife Lamech [7] ).

John Chrysostom considers the daughter of Adam and Eve to be the mother of Enoch. Unlike Filaret, John considers it quite natural for Cain to strive for reproduction [8] .

According to the Book of Jubilees (c. II century BC) Enoch gave birth to Cain Avan [9] .

Metropolitan Filaret draws attention to the contradiction between Cain's despair and his concern for procreation. Filaret illustrates this position of the sinner, who, "standing on the edge of the abyss, still thinks about his pleasures" [10] .

Theodoret Kirsky notes that God allowed Cain to marry his sister so that his offspring, being close relatives of each other, would live in harmony with each other [11] .

A.P. Lopukhin suggests that Cain got married before the murder of Abel , since he would hardly have been able to enter into marriage as a fratricide. The name Enoch Lopukhin is interpreted as “the sanctifier, initiator, renovator” and connects both with primacy in the family, and with the foundation of the city - the beginning of a new period in the life of society [12] .

Foundation of the city

Filaret believes that the city was just a fenced village and was founded much later than the birth of Enoch (when the offspring of Cain multiplied sufficiently). The reason for the founding of the city, according to the metropolitan, was Cain's fear of wild animals and killers [10] .

Chrysostom notes that the name of the city by the name of his son was a substitute for immortality lost in paradise and was only a “monument of sins” [8] .

Ephraim Sirin believes that the land of Nud was called so because of the tremors that it underwent while Cain was on it, and by changing the name Cain wanted to erase the memory of it [13] .

Filaret notes that Cain did not want to give his name to the city because of his reputation stained by fratricide [10] .

Further life and posterity

Little is known about the later life of the “first citizen”; the name of his wife is missing from the Masoretic text of the Bible. However, in the Ethiopian canon (the Bible of the Ethiopian canon contains a number of books that are considered non-canonical in other areas of Christianity), his wife is named Edna (“tender” - Heb.) [14] . In particular, this is mentioned in the Book of Enoch [15] ( Ch. 17 , Art. 5) .

Enoch's son Irad was born. Mehiael ( Maleleil ) was born from Irada, followed by Methuselah , and from Methuselah - Lamech [16] .

His son in the Greek and Slavic lists is called Gaidad, but Lopukhin offers the reading “ Irad ”, which he interprets as “the city” [12] .

In the Book of Yasher (the Righteous), the son of Henoch (Enoch) is named as Irad [17] .

Mkhitar Ayrivanksky calls the son of Enoch Gaeridad [18] .

Pedigree

In art

Enoch is mentioned in Victor Hugo 's poem Conscience ( La Conscience , 1859):

Enoch said: “It must be a fence for the tower,
So scary that no one can get close to her.
Let's build a city with a fortress,
Let's build a city and we will be sheltered. ”

Original text (Fr.)

Henoch dit: - Il faut faire une enceinte de tours
Si terrible, que rien ne puisse approcher d'elle.
Batissons une ville avec sa citadelle.
Batissons une ville, et nous la fermerons .--

The sculptural group "Cain restless" by Gustav Vigeland : the main character is depicted with his family.

The original interpretation of the biography of Enoch is given by Isaac Asimov . According to the science fiction writer, the story of Cain and his offspring refers to a much later period in the history of mankind than is described in the Bible. The writer compares Enoch with one of the kings of Sumer [19] .
