Napoleon III's proposal
In 1852, French Emperor Napoleon III married the Adelheide after being rejected by Karola , Princess of Sweden. He never saw his possible bride. This would be an alliance only because of political goals, since Adelheida was the niece of Queen Victoria of England and this marriage would help France establish close contacts with Britain.
The marriage never took place, largely because of the Queen’s reluctance to give her niece, and because of the princess’s parents, who were against marriage because of the bride’s early age. Napoleon III later married Spaniard Eugenia Montijo . The princess married Friedrich of Augustenburg , who in 1864 proclaimed himself the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein under the name of Frederick VIII.
