Stepan Kharitonovich Markovtsev ( November 20, 1911 - April 8, 1982 ) - Soviet military leader, Hero of the Soviet Union (1945), major general of aviation (1954), participant in the Great Patriotic War [1] .

Biography
Stepan Kharitonovich Markovtsev was born on November 20, 1911 in the village of Kukushkino (now Kochenevsky district of the Novosibirsk region ). He studied at school No. 12 in Kemerovo at the school of mining industrial apprenticeship, then worked as a miner (first as a mechanic’s apprentice at the Centralnaya mine, then as a miner). Later, after completing a driver's course, he worked in the city of Guryevsk, Kemerovo region [1] [2] .
In 1932, drafted into the Red Army . Since 1933, having graduated from the Irkutsk Military Aviation and Technical School , he served in the bomber regiment (as a link technician, then as a squadron engineer). In 1940 he graduated from the Engels Military Aviation School, and in the same year joined the CPSU (B.) . He served as a pilot in the Air Force of the Moscow Military District. He flew on SB bombers ; flight commander, deputy squadron commander of the 213rd bomber regiment of the 23rd mixed aviation division .
Great Patriotic War
Since 1941 - squadron commander, senior lieutenant; participated in battles in the Western and South-Western directions, bombed clusters of Nazi troops near Minsk , Bobruisk and Konotop . Since 1942 - squadron commander of the 503rd assault aviation regiment. Participated in the defeat of Nazi troops near Moscow. In an air battle near Rzhev, he was wounded (for the second time), already in the hospital, he learned about being awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
In 1942-1945 - the commander of the 208th assault aviation regiment. He participated in battles near Stalingrad , in the Right-Bank and Western Ukraine, in the Carpathians, in Czechoslovakia. He was awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky. He flew 115 sorties, shot down four enemy planes in air battles, destroyed 63 tanks, 2 railway trains, 201 vehicles, 5 steam locomotives, more than 1,000 enemy soldiers and officers, blew up two ammunition depots and three with fuel.
June 29, 1945 awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union "for personal heroism and courage, high flying skills and brilliant commanding qualities." Commander of the 208th Stanislavsky Red Banner Order of the Suvorov and Kutuzov Assault Aviation Regiment ( 227th Berdichev Red Banner Aviation Assault Division , 8th Assault Aviation Corps , 8th Air Army , 4th Ukrainian Front), lieutenant colonel [2] .
Post-war years
In 1947 he graduated from advanced training courses for officers at the Air Force Academy. He commanded aviation units. In 1954 he was awarded the title of Major General of Aviation.
In 1957 he entered the reserve, lived and worked in the city of Frunze (the capital of Kyrgyzstan), in recent years - in Moscow.
He died on April 8, 1982 in Moscow, and was buried at Kuntsevsky cemetery (plot 9-3) [2] .
