History
The city of Matucana was founded in 1647 by Miguel de Castro y Garcia, who was a descendant of one of the conquistadors Francisco Pizarro. In these places they found gold. A century later, in 1756, the Matukana gold mine was buried under an avalanche caused by an earthquake. Today the city is a center of ecotourism.
