Geographical position
The canton borders in the north with the canton of Saverne in the county of Saverne , in the east with the canton of Trushtersheim of the county of Strasbourg-Kampan , in the south with the canton of Vaslon of the Molsem district and in the west with the canton of Falsbur ( Sarbur district, Moselle department , Lorraine region).
History
The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 during the establishment of departments as part of the former “Strasbourg region”. Some time later, the canton became part of the newly created “Sar Union Region”.
The official date of creation of the canton is 1793 [2] . With the creation of counties on February 17, 1800, the canton was re-subordinated as part of the county of Saverne [2] .
In the German Empire from 1871 to 1919 there was no administrative division into cantons and there was no “district of Zabern (Saverne)”: as a result of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871, the territory was within the imperial province of Alsace-Lorraine without city divisions and communities.
Since June 28, 1919, the canton of Marmoutier again becomes part of the county of Saverne [2] .
From 1940 to 1945, the territory was occupied by Nazi Germany .
Before the administrative reform of 2015, the canton consisted of 25 communes. According to the law of May 17, 2013 and the decree of February 18, 2014, the number of cantons in the department of Lower Rhine decreased from 44 to 23. The new territorial division of the departments into cantons entered into force during the 2015 elections. After the reform, the canton was abolished [3] [4] .
