Geography
Asua Province is located in the southwest of the Dominican Republic, off its Atlantic coast. From the north, the territory of Asua is limited by the mountain ranges of Central Cordillera and Sierra de Martin Garcia . The highest points of the province are Mount Tina (2186 m) and Busu (1340 m).
History
Asua de Compostela, the main city of the province, was founded in 1504 by the Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez de Cuellar , who subsequently conquered Cuba for the Spanish crown. Thus, Asua de Compostela is one of the first European settlements in the New World. After a major earthquake on October 19, 1751, which completely destroyed the city, Asua de Compostela was moved to a new place.
After the independence of the Dominican Republic in 1844, the province of Asua was one of the 5 first provinces and included a number of territories now representing other provinces of the country.
