Symbols
Azure marching lions (also known as leopard ones in heraldry) are a symbol of Schleswig and fell onto the coat of arms from the coat of arms of Denmark , of which Schleswig was once a part and the coat of arms of which also contains two azure lions as a symbol of this historical area.
The silver nettle leaf in the scarlet is the historical symbol of Holstein , used by the counts of Schauenburg .
Traditionally, the Schleswig lions were depicted facing heraldically to the right, that is, to the left of the viewer. There is a legend according to which the lions were “deployed” after the Second War for Schleswig on the orders of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck , who considered that turning the lions with their backs to Holstein was “impolite”. Nevertheless, traditionally for German heraldry, the phenomenon known as Courtoisie héraldique (“heraldic politeness”), which means that coat of arms can be “expanded” for reasons of aesthetics.
Usage
The official coat of arms is used only by the state authorities of Schleswig-Holstein. For use by the public, a land logo has been developed that differs from the coat of arms in the form of a shield and a simplified image of lions, that is, only external elements that do not affect the heraldic composition.
