Altagracia Casandra Damiron Santana (Spanish: Altagracia Casandra Damirón Santana , born March 12, 1919 Barahona - died December 5, 1983 Santo Domingo ) - Dominican singer, dancer and actress of the theater (pseudonym - La Soberana ).
Life and work
Casandra Damiron showed her singing talent as a child. In 1940, she made her debut with great success at the Club Antillas in Santo Domingo, accompanied by the Orquesta Antillas , led by composer and pianist Luis Rivera , who later became her husband. In 1946, Casandra sings at the largest radio studio in his country - “Dominican Voice” ( La Voz Dominicana ), performing songs by Avelino Munoz Cosita linda and Maldición gitana . These performances made the singer so popular in Latin America that she is invited to tour Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. In 1955, she participated in the Festival of Peace ( Feria de la Paz ) organized by the dictator of the Dominican Republic R. Trujillo . At this festival, which was attended by folklore groups from France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands and others. Casandra organizes a dance group that was so resounding that R. Trujillo calls the singer the Dominican "ambassador of culture." Then her tours in France, Switzerland, Spain, the USA, Sweden, Argentina follow.
In the last years of his life, K. Damiron has been engaged in organizational and pedagogical activities aimed at creating a new generation of talented young singers and dancers of folklore. Since 1984, the Santo Domingo Society of Artists annually awards a special prize named after the famous singer - Premio Casandra .
