About Athanasius is known from the “Martyrdom of George,” written by Theodore Daphneath in the X century . According to his story, during the trial of St. George, Emperor Diocletian invited the magician Athanasius, who brought his potions. One of them was supposed to make a person submissive, and the other was deadly poison . However, none of the potions acted on George. After this Athanasius proposed to test George and his faith, forcing to perform a miracle :
... let George raise the dead before you, O king, and before all of us. Then we will submit to God as the Almighty. From here, from afar, a grave is visible, in which a recently laid dead man whom I knew during my lifetime was laid. If George resurrects him, then he will truly defeat us.
- Dimitry of Rostov . The suffering of St. George the Victorious
“The Martyrdom of George” reports that, by the prayer of George, the dead man was resurrected and then the sorcerer Athanasius “ fell at the feet of the saint, confessing that Christ is the Almighty God, and praying to the martyr to forgive him the sins committed in ignorance .” By order of the emperor Athanasius and the person resurrected by George were beheaded.
The memory of St. Athanasius is contained in the Greek poetic sinaxars and the printed Venetian Minea of 1603 . Athanasius does not have a separate liturgical follow-up; in the Mineas, used by the Greek churches, according to the 6th song of the Matins of Matins , the poetic sinaxar to Saint Athanasius is kept.
