History

The temple is a brick, stuccoed structure, built in the style of late classicism with some Baroque motifs in the decoration of the bell tower facades.

The modern interior of the temple

The current church was built in 1808 on the site of the wooden church of St. John the Baptist , built in 1755 . In the voluminous composition, elongated along the east-west axis, the main role is played by a temple of the octagon on quadruple type. The octagon on the outside is designed in the form of a rotunda , while inside its traditional octagonal space received the usual overlap with an eight-lobed arch, and the constructive transition from the supporting arches to the octagon is carried out with the help of clots . Such a constructive solution is a characteristic feature of the work of local construction cooperatives working according to the capital’s samples. The device over the rotunda of the coating in the form of a domed roof, crowned with a decorative round drum with a head, gives special completion to the temple. The semicircular apse is covered with a box vault with formwork above the windows and with small "pockets" adjacent to the temple.

The refectory is smaller in area than the temple, blocked by a box vault with formwork. The bell tower is three-tiered, pillar-shaped, square in plan, completed with a decorative faceted drum. The lower and upper tiers are covered by closed arches, the middle tier is deaf, was intended as a pantry and has a wooden run.

When decorating the facades of the temple, elements of classic decoration were widely used: a pilaster portico, panels with stripes, denticles in the frieze, etc. During the repair work, a baptismal temple was added on the south side of the temple. The iconostasis is assembled from disparate fragments of several classic iconostases originating from different churches.

The temple was closed in 1935 and reopened in 1945 .

The rector of the church since 1983, Metropolitan Archpriest Vasily Yaroslavovich Sajenitsa. [one]
