Story
The picture tells about the life of the Russian emperor Paul I ( Emil Yannings ). The film shows the entire period of Paul’s reign, beginning with the ascension to the throne and ending with his brutal murder.
Critical Review
Historical events in the film are interpreted quite freely, and the heroes of the film simply amaze with their grotesque. Emil Jannings with a broad expressionist brushstroke portrays the image of an evil, rude, but at the same time ridiculous crazy tyrant holding all of Russia in hedgehogs. Florence Widor is an exotic court beauty Countess Anna Osterman, and Lewis Stone is Count Peter Ludwig von der Palen - not a traitor, but a patriot.
Continuing the line given by paintings such as “ The Cabinet of Wax ” (1924), Lubich creates a monstrous image of Russia as a counterweight to civilized Europe. Later, this technique will be multiplied in the film "The Slutty Empress " (1934) by Joseph von Sternberg .
