History
Canton was founded on March 4, 1790 during the establishment of the departments as part of the former "Wissambur district".
The official creation date of the canton is 1793 [2] . With the creation of districts on February 17, 1800, the canton from 1801 was reassigned as part of the district of Wissembourg .
As part of the German Empire from 1871 to 1919, there was an imperial district of Weißenburg ( Kreis Weißenburg ) within the imperial province of Alsace-Lorraine without divisions into cities and communities.
From June 28, 1919, the canton of Niederbronn-les-Bains became part of the Agno district.
From 1940 to 1945 the territory was occupied by Hitler's Germany .
Before the administrative reform in 2015, the canton consisted of 19 communes. According to the law of May 17, 2013 and the decree of February 18, 2014, the number of cantons in the Lower Rhine department decreased from 44 to 23. The new territorial division of departments into cantons came into force during the 2015 elections. After the reform, the canton was abolished [3] [4] .
