History
During the time of the Holy Roman Empire, Woerth was part of the county of Ganau-Lichtenberg . Since 1588, Count Philip V of Hanau-Lichtenberg printed here the first coins circulated in his district.
Woerth gained fame as the site of the battle at the beginning of the Franco-Prussian War on August 6, 1870 [3] . About 20,000 warriors died in this battle. Today there is a museum that stores relics of that era. In Germany, in many cities, streets are named in memory of the Battle of Wörth, for example, in Berlin. This victorious battle for the Germans played an important role in the unification of the German states. In Wörth and its environs, first of all, to the west of the city, on the roads towards Freshwiller and Alsaskhausen, there are numerous military monuments that keep the memory of both the French and the Germans who died in that war.
