History

The ancient city, located on the banks of the Rhine River, has a rich history. Since ancient times, due to its convenient location near the river, which could easily be crossed at the location of the city, ancient tribes and peoples settled here. The Celts called the city of Saliso, the Romans who built military camps here, Saletio. Numerous remains of these ancient tribes were discovered in 1900 .

During the reign of the Merovingians, this area was called Salosia, and during the Carolingians who built the castle, the city began to be called Saltz. In 968, Otton I , the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, presented the city and neighboring villages to his wife, Empress Adelheide , who founded the Benedictine Abbey there , where she died in 999. Her grave became a place of pilgrimage. The bishop of Strasbourg sought her canonization in 1085.

During the reign of the Hohenstaufen dynasty , Seltz received the status of a city , and in 1357, Emperor Charles IV was turned into an imperial city .

In 1798, at the Rastatt Congress , borders were set, including between France and Baden. On January 9, 1803, Napoleon Bonaparte personally convened a meeting of the cantons in Selce. The original document of this ceremony, decorated with the seal of Bonaparte, is kept in the archives of the city.

Like all of Alsace, Seltz from 1871 to 1918 was annexed by the German Empire , and after the end of the First World War he was again returned to France. During World War II, the city was temporarily evacuated. The re-annexation of Alsace by Germany occurred in 1940. In March 1945, Seltz was liberated by the Allied forces and finally remained part of France.
