Biography

Abraham Kaylenborh painted paintings depicting mythological subjects against the backdrop of landscapes, as well as grottoes. Studied with Cornelis van Pulenburg. In 1639 he was admitted to the Utrecht Guild of Artists.

Typically, Kaylenborch formed the scenery for the stage with fragments of ancient architecture in the interior of the grotto. Sometimes this interior depicts the ruins of a tomb with a scene of sacrifice, where a group of people carries out the laying of goats and birds on the altar. Skulls and bones on the altar can be interpreted as symbols of the frailty of all things. [7]

The artist’s special love was for mythological plots with Diana bathing or relaxing in the grotto with her retinue [8] , [9] Various interpretations of such a plot can be found in Russian collections: “Bathing Diana with Nymphs” from the former collection of the 19th century Prince Fosini-Lucin , now in the collection of the Museum of Private Collections of the International Institute of Antiques [10] , which is part of the ASG Investment Group of Companies [11] .

Almost identical work "Rest of Diana and Nymphs after the hunt." Is in the collection of the State Museum of Fine Arts named after A. Pushkin [12] .

The artist’s paintings are stored in museums: Berlin, Braunschweig, Glasgow, Munich (old Pinakothek), New York, St. Petersburg ( State Hermitage ) [13] , Oslo, Stockholm National Museum, etc.
