Gisulf II (Duke of Benevento)

Very little is known about the Duke of Benevento Gisulf II. The main reason for this is the insufficient coverage of the early medieval history of Benevento in the sources .

After the death of Romuald II in 732, the usurper Adelais seized power in the duchy . King of the Lombards, Liutprand , ousted Adelais in 733 , but appointed his nephew Gregory as duke of Benevento, since Gisulf was still a minor. Liutprand adopted Gizulf and took him to Pavia . He later arranged his marriage with Skauniperga.

In 743, after the assassination of another usurper, Godescalc , Liutprand appointed Gizulf as Duke of Benevento. " The Chronicle of the Montecassino Monastery " reports on the transfer by Gisulf to the ownership of the monastery of all the lands in its district ^[1] . The Volturn Chronicle ( lat. Chronicon Vulturnense ) also mentions his gifts to the monastery of San Vincenzo-on-Volturno ^[2] .

After the death of Gizulf in 749, the duchy passed to his minor son Liutprand , and his widow Skauniperga served as regent under him.
